Today’s hidden gem alert: @luizsbarbecue, an inner city BBQ haven tucked just short wander from Fortitude Valley and Brisbane city.
I popped in last Wednesday night and was greeted by Luiz himself – truly a one-man show, cooking, serving and chatting to guests while tending to the low & slow BBQ you can tell he pours his heart into. He’s originally from Brazil and spent years travelling Australia with a food truck before settling into this no-frills pop up on Barry Parade about six months ago.
We went straight for the $55 Carnivore Box: beef brisket, pork burnt ends, sausage, pulled pork, coleslaw, a toasted milk bun, crinkle-cut potato crisps, and a tub of BBQ sauce (pro tip: you can add an extra milk bun for $2). The portions were super generous for the price point – we struggled to polish it all off between the two of us. Everything was tasty, but the standout was the brisket. Juicy, smoky, and so tender I sliced through it with the disposable wooden cutlery without a fight!
The whole meat feast goes down even better with a cold can of Guaraná Antarctica, a refreshing Brazilian soft drink made from Amazonian guaraná fruit.
If I’m being picky, I would’ve loved plates to help divvy up the platter and the option of hot chips over the potato crisps, but honestly, neither are deal breakers. This place feels like the ideal quick-and-delicious dinner stop before a night out and next time, I have my eye on the brisket burger and the pork ribs.
BBQ fans – this one needs to be on your list!
